Simple past: pronunciation of -ed ending in regular verbs
The-ed ending can be pronounced in three different ways according to final sound
of the verb in the infinitive.
/t/ for verbs ending in: /tf/, /k/, /s/, //, /p/
/d/ for verbs ending in: //, /at/, laul, vl, la/, /, /es/, /m/, /3/, /d3/, /z/, /o/, /u/
/id/ for verbs ending in: /d/, /t/.

The first Poor Laws were instituted in
England under Elizabeth I in the 1530s.
After the Poor Law Amendment Act
of 1834, which significantly modified
them, the Poor Laws continued to assist
poor people until they were replaced
by the Welfare system after the Second
World War. They aimed at helping
disadvantaged people such as children,
sick or disabled people, widows (women
who had lost their husbands), elderly
and unemployed people.
The system was financed by a property
tax levied at the local level and it was
supervised by a Board of Guardians.
Women had never had the right to vote
in Britain. From 1866, women who
wanted to obtain the right to vote started
a campaign. Many of them decided to
serve on the Boards of Guardians to prove
they were capable of holding political
responsibilities.
