the Eden project's Humid Tropics Biome is the largest conserva-
tory* in the world. It is 200 metres long, 100 meters wide and
47 metres high. The steel" framework is made of hexagons, with some
pentagons. Its architecture is inspired by honeycombs* made by bees. The
whole structure captures solar energy, and heat can be retained during
the night.
This project shows the interdependence of
plants and people and reminds visitors why
10 plants and people need each other for sur-
vival. From the food we eat to the clothes we
wear, the drugs we use to cure our illnesses*
and the materials that are the basis of our
industry, plants are the centre of things.
'S The largest biome houses* tropical plants
while the other biome houses more temper-
ate plants. They also show that man must
respect the balance of nature. For example,
the sunflower seeds provide* oil for cooking
20 and salads, engines and paints and are used
in cleaning agents, fuel, medicines, cosmetics
and plastics. British Nuclear Fuels use sun-
flower seeds in their research for plants to
eliminate radioactive toxins from contami-
25 nated land
One of the future plans is to build a third
dome for the desert plants.
It's a real success story, creating many jobs
locally and attracting many visitors from
30 England and overseas,
