Jack lived with his kind grandmother in a tiny old cottage near a village. They were very poor and one morning they didn't have any food left so Grandma told him to take their cow to market to sell it. Later that morning, when Jack was walking along the road to the market, he met a strange old man who proposed to exchange five magic beans for the cow. Jack gave the strange old man his cow, put the beans in his pocket and went back home pleased with himself. But Jack's grandmother was very angry because they couldn't eat the beans and threw them into the garden, under Jack's window. While Jack was sleeping that night he suddenly heard a peculiar noise and looked out of the window. What a surprise! There was an enormous green plant which was growing up into the clouds. The next morning Jack, who was actually quite a brave and curious boy, got up early and climbed up the magic plant. At the top he discovered a beautiful enormous old castle hidden in the clouds. The door was not locked, the castle looked abandoned so he went inside. Suddenly Jack heard a loud angry voice. 'Fee, fi, fo, fum!' Jack quickly hid behind a thick velvet curtain, at the same time a grumpy old giant came into the room and sat down in a big chair by the fire. On the table there was a small golden hen and an old wooden harp. 'Lay!' said the giant to the golden hen. The golden hen laid an egg which was made of gold. Then the giant, who was very tired, said 'Sing!' to the old harp and the old harp began to sing a beautiful song. The giant quickly fell asleep. When Jack heard the giant was snoring, he jumped out from behind the curtain and took the hen and the harp. While he was running to the beanstalk the harp shouted loudly, 'Help, master!' The giant woke up, kicked over the table and raced angrily after Jack! Jack was smaller than the giant but he was faster too. Finally Jack arrived at the top of the beanstalk and started to quickly climb down. While Jack was climbing down the beanstalk he shouted, 'Grandma! Get the axe!' Jack's grandmother took an axe and gave it to Jack when he arrived at the bottom. Jack quickly chopped down the beanstalk while the giant was climbing down and the giant fell from high in the sky. The giant crashed to the ground where he died instantly. Jack and his grandmother lived happily ever after with the golden hen and the singing harp. They were no longer poor or hungry! Ex3.
