Dawson can prove it using a letter in an equation :
[tex]x^2-(x-1)^2\\=x^2-(x^2-2x+1)\\=x^2-x^2+2x-1\\=2x-1\\=x+x-1\\=x + (x-1)[/tex]

So it is right.
