The Growth of the GAA from the 1900s to today 1913: Acquisition of Croke Park Archbishop Thomas William Croke was one of the founders of the GAA. In 1905 the GAA decided to build a memorial in honour of him. They raised money between 1905 and 1913 and used it to buy Jones' Road Sports Ground in Dublin. They re- named it "Croke Park" in honour of Archbishop Croke. 1947: The ALL-Ireland Football Final in New York The 1947 All-Ireland Senior Football Final, between Cavan and Kerry, took place in New York. The aim was to stimulate interest in Gaelic Games amongst the Irish-American population there. The final, with Cavan victorious, was a resounding success: the GAA made £10,000 profit and new clubs opened throughout America. 2003: The New Croke Park The new Croke Park opened with a capacity of 82,300. It became the third largest stadium in Europe. The world Special Olympics took place at the venue. 2015: First ever GAA World Games Irish games are now very popular across the world and there are more than 400 clubs outside of Ireland. Because of this popularity outside Ireland, the first ever GAA World Games took place in Abu Dhabi in the Middle East. There were teams from all over the world with both Irish and non-Irish players. The first GAA World Games was a global tournament of Gaelic football, hurling and camogie.
