A dark period for South Africa
From 1948, black people in South Africa suffered from a racial system called "Apartheid". It was one of the darkest
periods in history. They were oppressed by white people, they were not equal and they were considered as inferior.
For example, black people were not allowed to move freely in South Africa, they had "passes".
During Apartheid, people were classified according to two major racial groups: white or black Africans. Apartheid
became a law in 1948 and it told black people what they had to do, where they had to work, where they could go,
and who they interacted with. Apartheid was a segregationist law that forced white and black people to live in
separate areas. There were separate facilities and schools and mixed marriages were not authorized. Black people
and white people couldn't share a table in a restaurant and they were forbidden to sit together on a bus. Black
children and white children went to different schools and sports teams were all-white or all-black, never mixed.
White dominance was so powerful and the Pro-Apartheid wanted black people to submit and to accept their
miserable life. Black people were deprived of their possession and they had to live in the ugliest places of the
country: the townships.
